Jarasum

An Island turtle look at,

drawing Korea on the world

Around Gapyeong downtown, there is a town named Jara-mok (Turtle’s neck). Two hills, one big and one small, are similar to a turtle’s head and body. This turtle’s neck area is called Jara-mok. Where this turtle figure is looking is Jarasum (Turtle Island). Hosted on a once-abandoned island, Jarasum Jazz Festival become the most successful festival in Asia by featuring 1200 artists from 60 countries. The word ‘international’ has been removed from the name of the Jarasum Jazz Festival. But, Jarasum Jazz is Already a remarkable Korean music festival that is recognized worldwide. Yearly project ‘National Focus Project’(2024:Poland) that intensively introduces a specific country to the audience has been worked together with the countries’ embassies and/or cultural institutes. Also, the festival has visited world jazz festivals such as ‘Jazz Sous Les Pommiers’ in France, ‘Penang Island Jazz Festival’ in Malaysia, ‘Takatsuki Jazz Street’ and ‘Sukiyaki Meet the World’ in Japan every year, signed MOU with them. Moreover, thinking about the environment, the festival has been Green Life honorary ambassador for last 5 years and hold various eco-friend campaigns.

Jazz

ONLY JAZZ FOR 20 YEARS

In 2004, when the first festival was held, there was no other music festival that massive audience participated, thus most people were wondered why. However, the festival has been only jazz for 21 years. Jazz includes various subcategories such as swings, fusion, bossa nova, bebop, and world music. The fact that Jarasum Jazz introduces different types of music under name jazz is the major role of the festival. Moreover, through ‘Jarasum International Jazz Concurs,’ ‘Jarasum Creative Music Camp,’ and ‘Korea Jazz Showcase, the festival tries to find talented jazz musicians. Jarasum Jazz does not compromise the music, but by delivering enjoyable experience, the festival contributes on publicizing jazz.

Lying down on the grass, facing the pouring stars, the time with your loved ones and listening to the best jazz. Let’s visit Jarasum, Gapyeong on October.

Jarasum

An Island turtle look at, drawing Korea on the world

Near the town of Gapyeong lies a village called Jarameok. The village takes its name from its location on the "neck" of a turtle-shaped landscape, where two rounded hills resemble a turtle’s head and body. Just across from this turtle-shaped terrain is Jarasum, or “Turtle Island.” Once a barren land that would flood every time it rained, Jarasum was considered useless—until it became the birthplace of the Jarasum Jazz Festival.

Since its launch in 2004, the Jarasum Jazz Festival has grown into Asia’s leading jazz festival, having hosted 1,444 artist teams from 60 countries over 21 editions. Today, it is globally recognized as a successful Korean-style music festival. Each year, the festival spotlights a different country through its "Country Focus Program"—in 2025, Hungary will be featured—developed in close collaboration with the country’s embassy or cultural center. Thanks to these efforts, Jarasum Jazz Festival became a member of the Europe Jazz Network (EJN) and the Forum of Worldwide Music Festivals (FWMF) in 2023.

In addition to signing MOUs and actively engaging in cultural exchanges with major international jazz festivals, the Jarasum Jazz Festival is also celebrated as an eco-friendly event harmonizing with the lush nature of Jarasum. It has been appointed as a Green Life Ambassador by Korea’s Ministry of Environment for five consecutive years and leads various eco-friendly campaigns to protect the island it “borrows” for just three days each year.
